Abstract

Throughout history, Frankfurt am Main has always been a special city, and this is reflected in its appearance(s) today. It hosts one of the world's oldest stock exchanges, the headquarters of the German and European central bank, and many commercial banks. With its special panorama, aka the skyline, it is defined as a globally known financial center. All these features raise the question of whether the whole story of the city is about capitalism. Having the Frankfurt School in mind, this essay searches for the answer by focusing on the city, mainly on two districts, Bockenheim and Westend, and engaging the public transport strikes and the (re)actions of the youth (communities).
